When you visit the Greek Islands or anywhere in the world, one of the most memorable aspects of your trip is the food. Yes, when you visit Santorini there are unbelievable sunsets and incredible views to enjoy. But enjoying traditional Greek food in a restaurant that is favoured by the locals is definitely one of the highlights of any trip. There are some great traditional restaurants in Santorini where you can enjoy really authentic food (Metaxi Mas/Kokkalo). Kantouni, a real ‘hidden gem’ in Pyrgos is often said to be THE best place to for authentic Santorinian food and for Santorini outdoor dining!

You’ll find a great atmosphere here!
I want to try Santorini outdoor dining! Where can I find Kantouni?
Pyrgos village is the highest point on the island of Santorini, with panoramic views all the way to Oia. Here you can find the ruins of Kasteli Castle. This hillside village was declared a protected settlement in 1995. You’ll also discover traditional architecture, ruins of neo-classical mansions, vineyards, churches and beautiful sunsets (minus lots of tourists). Kantouni is located in the village square undercover of the pine trees. It’s one of the last traditional kafeneia (coffeehouses) on the island. Open since the 1980s, it is family run. As a result, Kantouni is extremely welcoming, with great service and serving simple yet delicious traditional food. Many visitors come back here numerous times during their stay in Santorini.

Kantouni is definitely worthy of the front page
What’s the menu like?
Typical starters at Kantouni include delicious fresh calamari and stuffed vine leaves. The fava is said to be amongst the best on the island. Not forgetting the tomato fritters which are often mentioned favourably in reviews. Tasty main courses on offer include traditional Greek chicken gyros, spiced lamb and melt-in-the-mouth risotto. You can also try fresh seafood including grilled octopus and spicy shrimp. You’ll probably be given a free dessert at the end of your meal, too! Finally Kantouni serves local wine and beer so you can have the full Santorini culinary experience (and good local Ouzo too).

Delicious grilled octopus
Trip Advisor Reviews
“This was one of our favorite places to eat on Santorini. The food was delicious, and they had a lot of vegetarian and gluten free options. The grilled fish was outstanding!” – MF

Some of the best fava!
“This restaurant is conveniently located in the centre of the square. We had lunch here when we first arrived Pyrgos. We took a tour then came back for drinks. Then we had lunch here the next day, then had drinks the 3rd day of our stay. I loved the outdoor seating atmosphere. I counted at least ten trees on a small lot that covered the restaurant. As a result it made it very pleasant shielding us from the beating sun. The service was wonderful. We had a local wine that was delicious, Atma Island, nice and crisp for a sunny day. Therefore I highly recommend eating, drinking and simply relaxing here. Finally, don’t be surprised if you see a cat roaming around.” – AliBug

Lamb gyros – mmm!
