Many talented painters and jewellery designers come from Santorini or have flocked here over the years. You’ll also find an amazing array of talented ceramicists making sought-after pottery in Santorini. Head to the small but perfectly-formed village of Megalochori and you’ll find a mixture of contemporary and traditional pottery at the Earth and Water pottery studio. Owned by award-winning ceramicist Andreas Makaris and his wife Kristi Kapetanaki, their designs are popular with both residents and tourists.

Andreas Markaris doing what he loves – pottery
The legend of Andreas Makaris…
Makaris has lived and worked in Santorini since 1985. He visited the island numerous times and fell in love with its beauty. He was also inspired by the incredible and light and the island’s ancient history. His father and grandfather were potters, so it made sense for him to follow in their footsteps. As a result he studied at the School of Ceramics in Athens. He later went on to teach pottery there for six years. Since then, his work has won awards at the annual Greek National Pottery Exhibition.
