Many visitors to Santorini are looking for the best view of the sunset. You’ve probably read a lot about the amazing views of the caldera and the spectacular sunsets on the island, and you want to make sure you have great photographs to remember your trip. You can enjoy a great view as well as a bite to eat when you visit Franco’s Cafe in Pyrgos village, the highest village on the island. It’s one of the best sunset spots Santorini has to offer!
So what’s so special about Franco’s?
You’ll find Franco’s in the historical village of Pyrgos, almost five kilometres from the capital, Fira. (In Pyrgos you’ll also find Kantouni Restaurant and Botargo Restaurant). When you arrive at the village, walk ten minutes uphill from the parking lot in the square to the Kasteli (Castle), which was built in 1580. It’s position was chosen for strategic reasons, guaranteeing a great view of the surrounding area and the sparkling Aegean Sea. Close to the entrance of the Castle lies the Church of Agia Theodosia. (Furthermore, there are two beautiful churches inside the castle). Franco’s is actually situated within the Castle’s walls. It’s a coffee bar serving light food, desserts & ice creams and alcoholic drinks, not to mention amazing cocktails!
Who is Franco?
Franco’s Cafe is the namesake of Franco Columbo – originally from Turin, Italy. Franco arrived in Santorini in the 70s and consequently fell in love with the the island. He lives between Santorini, Italy and France. He also managed Franco’s Bar in Fira for 20 years. Then he moved to Pyrgos castle to open Franco’s Cafe.
What’s the menu like at Franco’s?
You can enjoy a range of tapas at Franco’s – previous guests rave about the Santorini platter, the parmigiana crostini and the meatballs. This is THE place to visit if you’re looking for a special place to have cocktails. As a result you can enjoy a romantic evening sipping Champagne Cocktails, Bellinis or Bloody Mary’s with a fantastic view of almost every part of the island, with a backdrop of chilled out music.
“Franco’s Cafe is by far the best place to view the gorgeous Santorini sunset. It is a casual cafe with fabulous welcoming staff. So it has a small menu of appetisers, we shared the meatballs & the Santorini platter – both fresh & delicious.” – Lynne1955_11
“Great views of the island although it gets busy just before sunset , so get there a little early to get a table at the front with the best views. Best Bloody Mary ever!” – foxes66
