On a popular island where you’re spoilt for choice for restaurants, it’s difficult to find truly authentic places where the locals are happy to go and eat. But at Kokkalo, on the road to Firostefani (not far from Imerovigli) you’ll find delicious authentic Santorinian food and plenty of locals enjoying a wide range of dishes. The menu offers a wide range of dishes; starters are divided into two categories – land and sea. Seafood options include the famous Greek fava served with octopus, and fresh mussels ‘saganaki’ with feta cheese in tomato sauce. More land based options include another Santorini favourite – tomato fritters served with tzatziki dip, delicious smoked eggplant dip and feta cheese pie, topped with honey and flavoured with Mastic liquer.
Main courses mainly feature meat and fish, but there’s also a wide range of salads to choose from including the famous Santorini Greek salad (featuring the tastiest cherry tomatoes in the world). Kokkalo is well-known for its steaks (tagliata, Tomahawk and T-bone) which are matured for six to eight weeks. The pork tenderloin souvlaki is also a popular choice. Fish dishes include salmon fillet in orange sauce and a bream fillet in a bouillabaise soup. Many Tripadvisor reviews speak highly of the Choco Hell dessert (a home-made chocolate souffle) and Ehmek Kadayifi, a bread pudding served with kaymak, a special kind of clotted cream.
